Why Your Shipping Cost May Change After Repacking
Why Your Shipping Cost May Change After Repacking
When your package arrives at Blackship, we first measure and weigh it exactly as it was shipped to us. The shipping estimate shown at checkout is based on these original dimensions and weight.
Before dispatch, our fulfillment team will repack your package to ensure it is secure for international transit. Because of this, the final size and weight will change - which can affect the final shipping cost.
If you select Pack & Hold, once repacking is completed the package will be returned to your mailbox with the updated final dimensions and weight. The shipping method selected during the original checkout acts only as a placeholder. After repacking, you can review the final shipping costs and choose your preferred shipping method based on the updated size and pricing.
If you select Pack & Ship, your package will be repacked and shipped automatically. You will not receive updated dimensions before shipment. Any difference in shipping cost due to size or weight changes will be charged accordingly. However, if the final shipping cost is significantly higher than expected, we will return the package to your mailbox for review before shipping so that you are not surprised by an unusually high charge.
Repacking May Decrease Shipping Costs
Some sellers ship items in oversized boxes with excessive empty space.
In these cases, we may repack the contents into a properly sized carton. This can reduce dimensional weight and may lower the final shipping cost compared to the original estimate.
Repacking May Increase Shipping Costs
In other cases, the original packaging may not be strong enough for international shipment (for example: thin cardboard, paper envelopes, or minimal padding).
To protect your items, we may:
Use stronger outer cartons
Add proper cushioning materials
Double-box fragile items when necessary
This may increase the final size or weight of the shipment, which can increase the final shipping cost.
Insurance & Proper International Packaging
Proper repacking is also important for insurance eligibility.
Carriers require packages to be appropriately packaged for international transit in order for insurance claims to be accepted. If a package is not packaged properly and is damaged in transit, it may not be possible to successfully file an insurance claim.
For this reason, we must repackage items in sturdy outer cartons with appropriate protective materials when necessary, even if this increases the final shipment size and shipping cost. This ensures your items are properly protected and compliant with carrier insurance requirements.
